Icicles are natures way of telling you that your home is having problems
A snow covered roof and the shimmering, sparkling icicles hanging from the eaves isn’t a sign that your home is getting into the holiday spirit, it’s most likely a sign that your roof is poorly insulated. As beautiful as they are, those shiny, sharp suckers are a danger to those walking by, and can be destructive to your home.
If your home isn’t properly insulated, especially at the top, rising heat will travel all the way to your attic, before trying to escape out the top of your roof. When this happens, the layer of snow on your roof will begin to melt. If the outdoor temperature is still freezing, once that water hits the overhanging eaves, it will quickly freeze up again. Over time, this process will create a large ice dam, and overhanging icicles.
